Charity Sewing Workshop Kitten Bjorns to Socialize Stray Kittens

Anyone who loves helping stray cats & kittens is invited to attend our workshop to make these handy kitten carriers for local cat rescue organizations!

Inspired by the Baby Björn, the kitten björn is used to socialize feral kittens. The young kittens are cradled in the pouch of a hands-free kitten björn vest that foster parents will wear, so that kittens can safely adapt to human contact while their foster parents go about their day.

Even if you've never sewn before, you are more than welcome to  join us!

We can teach you sewing and/or find other important jobs to help with.

Rachael Batliner

Rachael has always loved creating things and learning the process of how something is made. As a young girl she would spend hours making woven potholders on a small plastic loom, knotting friendship bracelets with embroidery thread, or drawing and coloring in a sketchbook. But when she learned how to sew, everything made sense!

Her love of sewing began in her middle school home economics class. She had a wonderful teacher who taught hand sewing and sewing machine basics and Rachael never looked back!

She graduated the International Academy of Design and Technology in Chicago with a bachelor's degree in Fashion Design and has been a freelance designer and seamstress for the past 15 years.

Recently she moved to Hoboken with her husband and was looking for a way to share her passion for sewing. Working with M Avery Designs Sewing Studio, Rachael is able to inspire creativity through sewing and to teach anyone who wants to learn.

Nancy Randall

Nancy comes from a long line of seamstresses and milliners. Five generations of women who made a living creating wearable art for other people. She honors this tradition as a sewer, needleworker and quilter.

As a former elementary school teacher, Nancy brings creativity, enthusiasm and patience to the classroom - helping young people develop an artistic outlet, as well as the ability to plan and execute a project with focus and persistence.

Nancy and her college-age son have lived in Hoboken and Jersey City for 30 years; and she is well-known in the community as a teacher and afterschool educator.

When not teaching, Nancy works for a science-education nonprofit organization as a grant writer. She is also an excellent short-order cook and a terrible, but enthusiastic, golfer!

Anna Slocum

Anna (S) has been sewing since the age of 10. Her mother taught her to sew and read patterns. In high school, she would make her costumes for the plays and that started her love of theater. She went to college at SUNY Fredonia in western NY and studied production design specifically costume design.

While at school, she completed two summer internships at the Santa Fe Opera in NM working in the costume school during the day and running the shows at night.

After graduating college with a BFA in Production Design she moved to NYC and started working in a costume shop as a first hand.

She currently works at John Kristiansen NY Inc. as a first hand. The shop creates costumes for various forms of entertainment. Some notable productions are: The Great Comet (Broadway), Waitress (Broadway and Tour), The Get Down (Netflix), Marvel Universe Live (Arena show), and many others.

She lives in Jersey City with her husband and spends most of her free time working on various sewing projects. She is very excited to spread her love of sewing and teach others to love it as well!
