About Learn to Sew Lab
There's no better time to learn how to sew!
This brand new beginner sewing class will teach you how in a series of weekly classes. Learn to Sew Lab is currently only being offered virtually At Home with Live Video Instruction.
From learning how to thread and operate your sewing machine, to completing two useful projects. This class is jam packed with information and will leave you a confident stitcher ready to take on more sewing projects.
As a student in this sewing class, you will work on two sewing projects and learn all the fundamentals of sewing from instructors who've been sewing most of their life. The projects worked on in this class include an Origami style purse and comfy pajama bottoms/lounge pants.
All students will receive complimentary PDF copies of our patterns & instructions for each of the projects worked on in class. Keep reading the tabs above to learn more.
In this class you'll learn the following specific concepts and skills each week:
- Intro to the sewing machine and basic sewing
- Putting together and cutting out sewing pattern
- Learning to thread and operate the sewing machine properly
- Right side vs. wrong side of fabric
- Cutting fabric for sewing pattern
- Review of sewing machine usage
- Mastery of threading and filling the bobbin on the sewing machine
- Basic accessory design and construction
- Working with a lining
- Working with sewing patterns and tutorials
- Construction of pockets.
- Making ties
- Creating something that is reversible
- Following sewing tutorial instructions to make sewing projects
- introduction to garment fit
- Hemming basics on a straight hem
- making a buttonhole
Tools & Supplies Needed:
Supplies for this class are not included.

If taking the class at the studio, supplies can be purchased at the first class.
If taking the class at home and you do not live locally, you must purchase supplies from us online at least 1 week prior to the start date of the class. Supplies will be mailed to you. If you live close to studio, arrangements can be made to pick up supplies from the studio. You must purchase supplies at least 2 days prior to the class start.
Tools needed for At Home Class: sewing machine, scissors, thread, computer printer, scotch tape, printer paper, pencil or writing utensil that shows up on your fabric, ruler and/or tape measure, seam ripper
- 1/2 yard heavyweight cotton fabric or denim
- 1/2 yard lightweight cotton fabric for lining
- 1/2 yard medium weight interfacing
- 2 Yards of light weight cotton fabric (quilters cotton) or cotton flannel
In Studio vs. At Home Live Video Instruction
This class is being offered as a live class in our studio, as well as a video class with live instruction online.
Students taking this class in our studio will follow along with the instruction being taught by the instructor in the studio. In order to follow our pandemic studio protocol, as well as minimize movement in the studio studio students will have the opportunity to access the video feed to have closer views of the instructor teaching in the studio. Students will of course be able to ask questions and interact with the instructor.
Each student in the studio will have a reserved cutting table & sewing station with all the tools within reach. Studio students will have access to the video recordings to watch in between classes.
Students taking the class via Live Video Instruction will receive an email from us regarding your login instructions. You'll also receive access to a password protected personalized web page for the class. This page will include patterns, links to recorded videos of you class and helpful On Demand Videos for an optimal sewing experience at home. Students will of course be able to ask questions and interact with the instructor through video software.
